Conveyance of land at Peckham in the County of Surrey dated 19th July 1852: Charles Hay Esq. to J. D. Potter Esq.

Copy: Will and Codicil of Bruce Hersee Potter deceased dated 15th January 1903 Codicil dated 27th June 1904

... Rising Mount, Carew Road, Eastbourne ... brother Octavius Potter, brother in law Frederick Stevens ... to my said brother Edward Octavius Potter my gold watch with the initials S.C.P. on the front ... my brother David Alexander Potter my gold lever watch ... my daughter Caroline Rosina Potter the silver salver presented to my father the silver loving cup which belonged to my father, my father's photograph with his signature attached and the Certificate of Isack Potter my great grandfather and I also give to her £100 absolutely which is at present in my hands and which was left to my said Daughter by her grandfather Charles Thornback ... all plate linen china books pictures furniture and all other household and personal effects not hereinbefore specifically bequeathed to my dear wife Jessie Potter absolutely ... I devise and bequeath all my real and personal estate not hereby otherwise disposed of unto my trustees upon trust ... residue in trust ... to pay the income thereof to my said wife during her life and after her decease in trust to pay the income thereof to my said daughter Caroline Rosina Potter during her life ... and after the decease of the said daughter Caroline Rosina Potter in trust for the children of my said daughter or any of them or their issue in such shares ... [certain conditions not met] ... then in trust for the children of my said brother Edward Octavius Potter .

[There is a photo of a memorial "Sacred to the Memory of Caroline Rose Hannah Beckford [neé Thornback], the dearly beloved wife of Bruce Hersee Potter of Malton Lodge Reigate who departed this life at Hastings on May 26. 1889 aged 26 years" and was the mother of Caroline Rosina Potter whose grandfather is stated as Charles Thornback in B. H. Potter's Will. It also states on the plinth "The Private Grave of B. H. Potter" but there is no mention of his date of death on the photograph. His Will states that it is his wish to be buried in Highgate Cemetery and J. D. D. Burrough was asked by T.H.B. Burrough to look for it, but without a date of death known at the time, the cemetery records were not made available. Caroline Rosina Potter was born in 1883 before Caroline Rose Hannah Beckford neé Thornback died in 1889 and is not therefore the daughter of Jessie Potter.]

Hand written notes: Bruce Hersee Potter died November 11th 1915 (10th November in letter dated 13th March 1957 with 1957 accounts); married Caroline Hannah Beckford Thornback [it seems that B. H. Potter married again to Jessie and had no further children. The Estate accounts of B. H. Potter state that Jessie Potter died on 11th October 1955.]

[His Will doesn't mention his house, which at his death may have been in Eastbourne where he wrote his Will. Other addresses like Reigate as mentioned on his first wife Caroline's memorial or in Hastings where she died were probably previous addresses. Did it form part of the residue in the trust or was it rented? It's not mentioned in the Estate accounts winding up the trust in 1957. Presumably if it was owned, then at some time it was sold and the value added to the trust fund.]

John Dennett Potter - Will Trust; The late Mrs Sophia Dodman's settled fund

Distribution Statement of Account as at 20th May 1927:

The late John Dennett Potter died on 17th September 1882, having by his Will dated the 14th January 1878 appointed his son Mr. John Dennett Potter and Mr. Frederick Stephens, Executors and Trustees thereof ... Mrs. Sophia Dodman died on the 24th September 1926.

One seventh share to ... the child of the late B. H. Potter namely Mrs. Caroline Rosina Burrough

Mrs C. R. Burrough's share; 1/7 share payment: £1,309.12.7

John Dennett Potter - Will Trust; Supplemental Distribution

Statement of Account as at 24th August 1927

Balance divisible: ... Mrs Caroline Rosina Burrough 1/7 share: £556.17.2

Estate Accounts of the late John Dennett Potter (undated; this must be son of the John Dennett Potter who died on 17th September 1882; the Peckham premises is mentioned - this was purchased in 1852 but a date of 1916 is mentioned for stock transfers and Mrs C. R. Burrough wasn't married until 1905, both dates after JDP senior died. This J. D. Potter doesn't seem to have had any interest in the late Mrs Sophia Dodman's settled fundset up by his father.)

Mrs C. R. Burrough's share: £1,082.3.8 plus £182.5.9 plus £7.17.3

Will of Caroline Rosina Burrough of "Grasmere" Frenchay near Bristol dated 7th August 1941 (after her son John was killed on 21st April 1941)

... To Thomas Hedley Bruce Burrough the silver salver engraved with the name of my grandfather my Family Bibles and the Commission granted to Isaac Potter and signed by King George III and to my daughter Eveline Rose Burrough the silver Loving Cup bequeathed to me by my Father ... rest and remainder of my estate of whatsoever kind and wheresoever situate unto my son and daughter ... in equal shares absolutely

[No mention of the house Grasmere so either that had already been given to T. H. B. Burrough or divided equally but the house was owned by T. H. B. Burrough alone from about 1941 or 1943. She is not stated as formerly of Grasmere so she may have been living there before giving it to T. H. B. Burrough who was in Berkshire during World War II and married on 18th October 1941 or had just given it away. It is understood that it was given as a wedding present. Otherwise son and daughter would have had a half share and son would have had to pay his sister for her half.]

Codicil of Caroline Rosina Burrough formerly of "Grasmere" Frenchay near Bristol but now of Rose Cottage Compton Martin near Bristol dated 14th September 1953: to my daughter Eveline Rose Burrough ... my house Rose Cottage and the garage

Accounts showing administration of Fund falling for distribution on death of Life Tenant, Mrs. Caroline Rosina Burrough for the period 4th December 1955 to 31st March 1957 [ie after Caroline Rosina Burrough's death on 4th December 1955]:

Balance transferred in equal shares to the Residuary Legatees:

Major T. H. B. Burrough £5,799.10.5

Miss E. R. Burrough £5,799.10.6

[The estate distribution on the death of B. H. Potter who died on November 10th 1915 is missing. The Will states that income is left in trust to his wife Jessie and on her death in trust to his daughter Caroline Rosina Potter, and after her death for the benefit of her children. Jessie Potter of The Bay Hotel, Seaton, Devon died on 11th October 1955 at Drakefell, Meadow Road, Seaton and Caroline Rosina died on 4th December 1955 so where Caroline Rosina got an income to support three children through public schools and their twenties and buy a house after her separation from her husband H. G. Burrough in about 1925 or 1927 until Jessie died in 1955 is unclear as Jessie had the income.

Caroline could have had a large gift on her wedding in 1905 or at any time before B. H. Potter died in 1915, but B.H.P.'s estate became a trust for his second wife Jessie after 1915 and Caroline was assumed to be supported by her husband before 1915 so there would have been little reason to give her a large gift before B.H.P. died or in his Will. The Abbots Leigh cottage near Bristol where the whole family lived before her separation was probably handed over to her as she continued to live there until she bought a much larger house (Grasmere, Frenchay, Bristol) where she and her children lived until 1941. E.R.B. must have lived there until she got work at the Bank of England in London as she was the godmother of Belinda Young who lived in Frenchay. T.H.B.B. and J.D.B. lived at Frenchay until Tom trained sappers in Berkshire during the Second World War and John was killed in the war in 1941.

H. G. Burrough would have had a small YMCA pension but he needed that to support himself and his sister Nellie and look after inherited family properties in Broad Chalke near Salisbury after his separation from Caroline Rosina in 1925 or 1927. Caroline Rosina was a life tenant for only two months and the capital was still in trust until she died and the residuary legatees (her children T. H. B. Burrough and E. R. Burrough) inherited the capital after her death. Perhaps Jessie gave part of her income to support Caroline Rosina.]

The Estate of the late Caroline Rosina Burrough

Estate Accounts for the period 4th December 1955 to 31st March 1957 [ie after Caroline Rosina Burrough's death on 4th December 1955]:

Net value of the estate as declared for Estate Duty purposes: £7,913.15.-

Balance transferred to Beneficiaries' a/c:

Major T. H. B. Burrough £3,331.16.-

Miss E. R. Burrough £3,489.6.-

[Caroline Rosina died with a net value of nearly £8,000 which is quite large considering that she owned a small cottage in Compton Martin and had not had large inheritances and never earned a living; so how did that value arise?]

Letter from Potter Sandford & Cosgrove dated 2nd April 1957 to Miss E. [R.] Burrough, Barn Orchard, Broad Chalke, Salisbury, Wilts.

[Mrs. Jessie Potter was the second wife of B. H. Potter and not the mother of Caroline Rosina Potter and not E. Burrough's grandmother. Eveline Rose Burrough was born on 26th April 1906 in Huddersfield and died on 21st January 1985 in Broad Chalke.]
